A PROUD HISTORY TRADITIONAL PRODUCTS

Salema village gets its name from the local fishermen.

Before it was settled, the fishermen used to come here to catch a fish known as Salema.

It became common to call the area by this name until the first fishermen settled and built their homes, officially baptising the village “Aldeia de Salema”.

The colourful boats lined up on the seashore are a testament continuation of a simple way of life where man and sea live in harmony.

Traditional products are abundant in the markets in and around Salema.

Typical produce you will come across are sweet almonds, delicious figs and locally made sweets.

Local crafts include hand painted pottery, leatherwork, lace and clothing.

COASTAL WALKS THE END OF THE WORLD

There are many coastal paths starting from Salema that wind through the cliffs and valleys of the impressive coastline.

To the east of Salema the beach of Boca do Rio (river mouth) is where, it is said, supplies were transported to the inside villages.

The nearby fort of Almádena was built to protect the transport of supplies from the infamous pirates who roamed the coast.

A local legend tells of a pirate ship full of treasure that sunk in this area.

To the west the coast paths lead all the way to Sagres and beyond, through some of the most beautiful scenery the Algarve has to offer.

West of Salema is what was thought in the middle ages to be the end of the known world.

The small fishing port of Sagres is entwined in the history of exploration.

Prince Henry the Navigator built his world famous early navigation school on “Ponta de Sagres”, a finger of rock pointing seaward in the direction of his major discoveries.

The fortress remains intact, a symbol of the important role the area played in nautical history.
